Flandre Scarlet
(フランドール・スカーレッ) is an adorable little girl from the Touhou Project series of danmaku (bullet hell, to put it lightly) games. Well, that's not entirely true; although she certainly has the appearance of a ten-year-old girl, she is almost half a millenium old. And even with the most bizarre of personal preferences, Flandre could not be easily classified as "adorable." She's bordering on sadistic and a complete psychopath to boot.
Appearance
Flandre appears to be a ten-year-old girl or so, and her physical size reflects this; she’s about 4’2 or so, and is very, very light. She’s got long, light blonde hair, usually covered with a rather poofy pink hat with a red ribbon around it. Flandre is also a rather obvious vampire, with pale skin, deep scarlet eyes and two fangs constantly peeking out from her mouth. She is usually seen wearing a frilly red dress and vest with an even frillier pink shirt underneath.
However, her archaic style of clothing pales when compared to the other oddity in her appearance – her “wings.” Flandre has two thin “wings” made of iron protruding from her back, with what appears to be prism shards (or oversized Christmas lights) at regularly spaced intervals. These shards form the colors of the rainbow (plus a more purplish shade than violet), and each respective shard lights up according to her emotions.
She is usually seen with either a displeased scowl or childishly happy grin. Neither of these expressions are usually reassuring, although they’re certainly better than her face when she actually gets angry.
Personality
Flandre Scarlet is, in three words, a complete lunatic. She’s usually nonaggressive and content to stew in her own instability, but when she’s actually angered she just flat-out berserks. She’s violent when irritated – and quite irritable. Combined with a tendency to destroy her problems, major and minor, Flandre’s not the best person to anger. She makes very little sense to most people, as most of her actions have no real motive or cause save for wanting to see what’ll happen.
She views everything in respect to herself, save for matters which involve her older sister. In every other way, things are just toys for her to play with. Bizarrely enough, she can get extremely attached to some of her “toys”, choosing instead to teach them proper manners and following them around incessantly. This can be a good or a bad thing – good in that she’s less likely to kill or even hurt them, and bad in that you’re stuck with her at that point.
Oddly enough, most of the time she alternates between being very prim and proper and being downright terrible in terms of speech and action. She would never curse, as ladies simply don’t curse, but she wouldn’t hesitate a moment to bash something’s brain in while laughing. She speaks as a young girl would (reflective of her appearance rather than her age), and enjoys using sound effects to recreate events. (This ranges from “the building went POW! and it fell like WHOOSH!” to “and his head went KATHUNK-thunk-thunk on the ground!”)
Finally, she has no idea she requires blood as a vampire. This, to say the least, is a problem for her; back when she was shut in the basement for a few centuries, her sister prepared normal meals (such as cake and tea) with blood, not allowing Flandre to know that blood was her primary source of sustenance. As such, Flandre’s never known that blood is required for her survival (even if it’s in small doses). This has led towards, oddly enough, a lack of respect towards humans; instead of at least keeping them alive for blood, Flandre honestly doesn’t care enough to think they’re worth the effort it would take to keep them alive. Thankfully, Flandre can’t convert humans into vampires even if she drinks directly from them. Instead of becoming a vampire, it’d be more like a blood donation, albeit an unwilling one.
Abilities
- Flandre canonically has the ability of “destruction of anything and everything” or “immense destructive power.” To elaborate on this power, all objects have a certain point where the most energy flows through them, where the tension is highest – the “eye” of that object, which Flandre can see. Once she visualizes this, she can grab it in her hand (even if the object is far away) and force her own energy into it, causing a rather violent conflict of energies and – depending on the object – a bloody explosion or a crumbling structure. This is just a wee bit overpowered for obvious reasons, so I’ll be removing the ability to use it on living creatures and making it absolutely draining to use it on any other structure – as in, she could probably destroy things around her size (cars and statues being about the limit) one or two times per day, with a third time leaving her severely drained (read: half dead) for a day or two.
- Flandre is incredibly physically strong, and that’ll be limited to a certain point. No longer will she have the strength of a superhero. However, she’ll still be deceptively strong, hiding the strength of a grown man in her body.
- Flandre can fly with ease, simply rising up at will – in fact, this is her primary means of getting around. Since this would be somewhat unfair, she’ll be limited to being roughly four-five inches above the ground and moving at normal human speeds.
- Finally, Flandre usually has Lävatein, the legendary wand of destruction. However, it’s a material possession, so that’s rather easy to nerf - no destructo-wand for her!
Weaknesses
- She’s a complete lunatic. This could make social interaction rather hard for all involved, as well as making her react oddly to things that shouldn’t make her react that way. Her berserker method of dealing with problems also means that when larger problems rear their head, she has a very good chance of getting hurt herself. After all, charging in to deal with things doesn’t work quite so well when most of your powers have been significantly reduced in scale.
- She is a vampire, and as such she requires blood. Not in large doses, but blood is her primary method of sustenance as a vampire. The longer she goes without that, the more she’ll retreat into her own insanity, going from a relatively well-mannered psychopath to a deranged monster.
- Although she’s aware humans are necessary for her survival in some way, she has no idea she requires blood at this point in time. Coupled with the second weakness, this could lead to some rather obvious problems. The other problem with this is that she has very odd tastes, thanks to blood being an ingredient in many of her meals beforehand; she probably won’t care too much for pure blood, and her taste for normal dishes will range from picky to outright bizarre.
- Unlike most vampires, Flandre has no improved regenerative abilities or shape-shifting. She’ll heal wounds and injuries at about the normal rate for humans.
- Light is a problem for her. Although it’d be inaccurate to say that sunlight melts her away or anything like that, the fact is that she has been in a basement for almost all of her life, so she’d be very sensitive to most light. Sunlight, especially, will definitely be hard on her eyes and pale skin. Although it isn’t a mortal weakness, she would most assuredly avoid going out into the light whenever possible.
- Although this is not exactly a weakness, it is very, very easy to read Flandre’s emotions. As in “the lights on her wings light up depending on what emotion she’s feeling, complete with intensity to show just how she’s feeling it.” Even if you’re not quick enough to pick up on this signal, Flandre also doesn’t make any attempt to mask her emotions, so manipulating her would theoretically be very, very easy.
History
Flandre was born in the year 1508, to vampire parents and a vampire sister. Perhaps it was due to her sister’s abilities to see and manipulate fate, maybe it was just obvious to the people around her that she wasn’t the most stable of individuals. However, upon realizing that her younger sister was both insane and more powerful than her, Remilia locked her younger sister up in the basement of the mansion. She was treated well, given regular cooked meals (all of which contained the blood necessary to her survival), and given new clothing and toys to play with. Because of this, Flandre never really felt a strong urge to escape the mansion; in fact, she respected her sister greatly enough to honor her wishes not to try and break free. This is made more impressive with the knowledge that Flandre was powerful enough not just to escape but to destroy the entire mansion in an instant if she had desired.
(NOTE: Her wings are never actually fully defined in canon, but evidence strongly points to them being artificial. This is just a potential explanation I’m using for Flandre in this RP.) Centuries pass in this manner, with Flandre growing up bit by bit. Remilia inherits the Scarlet Devil Mansion, and decides to keep Flandre in the basement as always, telling only a select few inhabitants of the mansion about her existence. The younger sister is docile, for the most part, except for the frequent destruction of her toys. At some point, though, in one of her visits with Remilia, she realizes that her older sister has two bat wings on her back – wings that she was unlucky enough to be born without. Saddened by this realization and jumping at the chance to make herself more like her sister, Flandre fashions two makeshift wings out of iron and prism shards (probably using materials of the objects around her) and jams them into her back. Being immortal, she survives the rather foolish move (definitely feeling some pain in the process, though). Magic is used to bind the wings to her, making them a part of her instead of a foreign object partially lodged in her body.
Skip forward to 2003. Flandre is 495 years old, and still locked in the basement. About this time, a bizarre red mist begins to cover the land of Gensokyo, eventually developing into a thick fog that obscures sunlight. Two humans, the shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei and the witch Marisa Kirisame, set off to determine the source of the mist and remove it. They find out it is Remilia Scarlet, blocking the sunlight her family detests so much, and after much fighting manage to “convince” her to remove it. Remilia is removed from the mansion and taken to Reimu’s shrine, in an attempt to find out what’s going on.
Immediately after this event, Flandre hears that her sister has been taken from the mansion. Naturally, she goes berserk. In a rage, she escapes the basement and begins wreaking havoc in the grandest, most chaotic temper tantrum Gensokyo has seen. Upon hearing of the chaos in the mansion, Reimu and Marisa return once more and “play with her.” Flandre is defeated, and decides to sulk at the two until they return her sister. Promising to return Remilia soon (and to come back and play with Flandre again), Reimu and Marisa leave once more.
A year passes. Reimu has made good on her promise, and Remilia is back in power at the mansion. Flandre is, of course, happily back in the basement. After about a year or so, Flandre simply vanishes from the bottom of the mansion. Wisely, most of the residents decide not to question the gifts fate has bestowed upon them.
Upon waking up, Flandre realizes a few things. One: her wand of destruction is missing. Two: she’s hungry. Three: Remilia isn’t nearby.
May the gods have mercy upon the city of Manhattan.
In Manhattan
Flandre woke up near an office building located on 35th and Madison upon the first rays of dawn. She immediately retreated into the darkness of the building, and quickly discovered the "record/communicate" function of the various functional computers laying about. She learned a few things from her conversations; namely, her location, and that Big Sister wasn't here. At this point, Freudia Neuwahl came and found her, believing her to be an innocent defenseless vampire. After Flandre ingeniously used a paper cutter blade to dismember the nearest crab in front of her, Freudia realized the error of her ways and retreated. Flandre, having no sense of self-preservation whatsoever, didn't realize Freudia was trying to escape in a way to cause harm to her, and so let her go without any trouble.
A few days later, Flandre - whilst browsing through the streets for potential food - found a bleeding and broken Madotsuki in the middle of the street. Picking her up (and scoring a free banquet off the blood leaking from her), the young vampire took her back to her office. Delighted by this new toy, Flandre bandaged Madotsuki as best as she could and let her attempt to recover. A broken toy was a boring one, after all.
After Zero's announcement to the city, Flandre found an anxious Rolo practicing his manual shooting skills via an old Nintendo game. Flandre, not really caring about the game too much, decided that the gun was far more interesting and attempted to seize it from Rolo. When he complied, she gave it back, bored at his simple responses, and promptly attacked him. The real gun was pulled out, and like any good child Flandre immediately started poking at it. When Rolo refused to give it to her, she threatened him before punching him squarely in the stomach. After landing, Rolo shot wildly at her, barely skimming the side of her arm. However, unused to such pain, Flandre went berserk, using her own momentum to launch herself into Rolo and biting him. After her meal (the calming effects were MASSIVE), Flandre promptly declared Rolo to be her new friend, and floated away happily.
Skip ahead to the great Masquerade. Flandre showed up, adorned in a white Victorian ballgown and bloodstained mask/gloves (the crabs were in her way, what else could she've done), and promptly "befriended" a few people: Naoki Kashima, who she would not realize she already knew until after the Masquerade, Mitsuki Konishi, who Flandre swears could've been an angel (even if she was boring and was only dressing up as such), and Sakuri Kunikai, who as of this point still has no idea of Flandre's less-than-ideal origins. Leaving the Masquerade genuinely happy and exhausted, Flandre rested for a short time before heading to the subway to hear Zero's speech. Upon arrival in the subway, she was met solely by the rather obese Pokey Minch bumped into her. After some threats of cannibalism, he obeyed her commands of being a temporary seat for her, and acted as a proper chair should.
When Clover attacked, Flandre was severely disappointed that she didn't get to see the behemoth up close and personal; after all, Mr. Bigcrab was so cool-looking. Sadly, the mun has not logged any further just yet; more will come!
Relationships
Freudia Neuwahl - Flandre's new maid. At least, that's what Flandre would like to think. Freudia would probably say otherwise.
Madotsuki - Flandre's temporary roommate, and new toy. She's a little broken at the moment, but Flandre's set about fixing her up.
Naoki "Searcher" Kashima - Flandre's second "friend," and the first demon she's met with so far. Also the first true friend she's made, as he is actually willing to try and be friendly with her. He's also an unofficial teacher of sorts - to her, at least.
Pokey Minch - A rotund toy that bumped into her in the subway. The tires and flub make a good seat, and after a little bit of coercion he did what was told like a good little toy.
Rolo Lamperouge - Flandre's first "friend." Admittedly, might be a little one-sided, since she made said friend by attacking him then drinking his blood. Still, she's loyal to him!
Zero - Very interested. If he truly wishes to destroy their captors - the ones holding Big Sister away from her - then she is more than willing to assist him in all matters of destruction.
