In the fourth week of November 2008, a series of events and plots put together by several characters led to the death and then apparent resurrection of Cloverfield.
The plot was suggested first when Big Mommy dropped a whale she was eating in front of the U.N. Building. A few people suggested that the whale be used as bait to poison Big Mommy. The monster took back the whale before they could touch it, but another opportunity soon presented itself.
That opportunity came after the sinking of the Intrepid, which led to tons of oil and chemicals leaking into the water and killing off all the nearby marine life. Scores of dead fish began to wash up on shore. It was then that Axel suggested that all the fish be used as bait to poison the monster. That poison happened to come from Marluxia, who made a large batch of the deadly stuff based off of Dahlia Hawthorne's favorite poison. The methods for obtaining this poison both from Dahlia and from Marluxia were somewhat unsavory (and then again, somewhat not) for Axel.
A team of volunteers, gathered by Billy Coen and Sora, then proceeded to help gather up all of the dead fish along the shore and group it into a pile. Axel went about poisoning the entire batch by himself. The bait was left by the water's edge on the southern end of the island on Sunday.
On Wednesday, Cloverfield found all of the bait and gobbled it up. The poisoning attempt was a success: Clover roared and thrashed around for about fifteen minutes before falling over dead. In the process, all of the parasite crabs jumped off her back and scattered into the city. A large crowd of Manhattan citizens gathered around the dead monster to check and see if she was truly dead. A few scientists and detectives gathered a few samples of the monster, including teeth, fluid and tissue samples, and photographs. Some celebrations were had, and plans were made to try and get off the island.
Unfortunately, it wasn't to last. The day after Clover's death, Thanksgiving Day vanished off the calendar for every person in Manhattan: no character has any memory of Thanksgiving ever occuring. What's more, everyone discovers on Friday that Cloverfield's body has disappeared from the shore, and the monster seems to have come back to life. There's no way of knowing how the monster returned: whether it came back to life, if it wasn't truly dead to begin with, if it's an entirely different monster, or some other explanation. One thing is certain: there is now double the amount of parasite crabs in the city since Clover's "death," and someone wants Cloverfield to stay there.
